Both working in the office and working remotely have the same burden of long hours. It’s more convenient to work from home because of the free time settings. Work isn’t the main focus of your life, you have other things to attend to. There are a number of ways to use your personal calendar to prioritize.
1. Create Blocks of Personal Time
According to your contract, you have to work a certain number of hours each day. You spend less time with your significant other if you don’t work outside of them. Creating time blocks dedicated to your home life can help you set aside this time. Even if the effect is solely psychological, this may be all it takes to make a difference.
There are different ways to see your schedule, but most of the time periods are rectangular blocks. This is one of the reasons this method is called time-blocking. It’s either already accounted for or will be afterwards, so you don’t need to think about work at these times. It’s a great way to organize your schedule.
2. Divert Work Communications While Off-Duty
A system to divert work communications while you aren’t working can help facilitate these time blocks. For example, present colleagues can be your point of contact if others want to reach out to you. You can set alternate contacts within your account on calendar programs that permit it. People who need you can be directed to your point of contact when you invite them to something.
Let people know that you won’t be available if everything else fails. Work isn’t your only priority and therefore doesn’t need to precede your personal life. If work can’t be done the next day, you should be paid for your time.
3. Mute Work Notifications During Free Time
You don’t have to do these things in order to reach out to others. It is possible that colleagues will be disrespectful of your hours if you communicate your unavailability. If you don’t mute notifications after work, you’ll prevent a bigger headaches. If you’re partially available, you don’t want to get pulled back to the office with every notification.
The former is the only recipient of work notifications, so having separate work and personal devices is convenient. Not all jobs have a set hours, and you may need to be on-call during extended periods of time. During time with your significant other, you can combine independent devices with physical separation from them.
4. Set Automatic Responses for Events Outside of Work Hours
Having your calendar decline after-hours events is one way to keep your time. If you’re really needed, the sender can reach out to you personally. The purpose of this is to create a filter that acts in the background of your work. The more firmly set the process is, the harder it is for others to get around your personal time limits.
It’s possible to set specific days and times so that automation doesn’t happen everywhere. If you have a date night on Friday nights, you can only make it active then. If you watch a movie from 8PM to 10PM, your calendar can only be avoided. It’s ideal that whatever works best for you is ideal.
5. Keep Your Schedule Transparent
It may be easiest for you to make your schedule public so others can see it. If you put the link in your message signatures, anyone can see it. The nature of time, as well as its inflexibility, should be labeled as precisely as you need.
It may be helpful to use the schedule to stay on track. To maintain their importance to you and your colleagues you can schedule events directly into it. Being open and firm about your schedule will make it easier to prioritize your personal time.
Keeping your work/life balance healthy is one of the hardest parts of working. If you’re not needed at work, less personal time means less rest and less workday efficiency. You can leave your work phone at home, and have a good night with your significant others by setting up these boundaries.
