To mark the 60th anniversary of the Canadian Coast Guard, the base was opened to the public on Saturday.

Commissioner Mario Pelletier welcomed everyone to Coast Guard Day in Victoria, saying it was with pleasure. One more chance to celebrate in a year full of celebrations marking the Canadian Coast Guard’s 60 year service to Canadians.

There are a lot of questions left on Vancouver Island communities.

An open house event was held to help shed some light on the work of the organization, and to help drum up recruitment.

Information booths, Coast Guard personnel, and equipment from all areas of the organization’s work were on display. Environmental spill response work and remote communications were on display.

Excited visitors got to see the coast guard at work when they weren’t busy touring the vessels.

The star of Saturday’s event will now be based on the west coast. After being converted for search and rescue duties with the coast guard on the east coast in 1987, the 67.68 metres vessel was originally built as an offshore supply vessel.

When required, she will still perform search and rescue duties, patrol, and fisheries enforcement, but her main work will be maintaining and replacing navigation buoy and remote light-stations.

It has been a long time coming for us and we are very excited. The western region has been working on the ship for about two years. There is more lifting capacity and cargo carrying capacity in the Grenfell than in the Bartlett. She is a bigger platform that will allow us to get more work done more quickly and safely.

A 58 foot vessel catches fire and sinks between Malcolm Island and Port McNeill.
